Geography:
Brazil is the world's fifth largest country, after the USSR,Canada , China and the USA. With the exception of Chile and Ecuador, Brazil borders every country in South America. It has an extension of 8.5 million sq km, which is half the entire continent.
Brazil can be divided into a four regions. The long, narrow costal band; the Planalto Brazileiro; and two great depressions, the Amazon basin in the north and the Paraguay basin in the south.
Most of Brazil is sparcely populated. Most of the land in the Amazon basin and the Mato Grosso was not completely explored by Eurpeans until this century. Still new mountains, new rivers and new indian tribes are being discovered, as the Amazon is settled and cleared.

Population & People: Brazil's population is above 135 miilion. It is the sixth most populous nation in the world. However still Brazil is one of the least densely populated nations in the world. The population is concentrated more along the coastal strip and in the cities. The Portuguese colonized Brazil through intermarrying with the indian population and with African slaves. The Blacks and the Indians also intermarried and the three races became mixed.

Religion: We can say that Brazil is a Catholic country. It has the largest Catholic population of any country in the world. However Brazil has other sects and religions.

Language: The official language is Portuguese. If youn speak Spanish, they can understand, since both languages have some sounds very similar. The Portuguese spoken in Brazil is different in pronunciation and vocabulary from the original language spoken in Portugal.
